A few 80’s LC questions for you guys. Lately I have been looking for 88 > present 4runners but am curious about the LC. First off what year did Toyota loose the carb and go with EFI? 2. What is the difference between the FJ60 and FJ62, years, power plants, and trainees? 3.Witch of the two is going to be a better daily driver? Thanks, Josh.

Josh I love the landcruisers. I once owned a FJ-60 and enjoyed it. The difference in the 60 and 62 is the answer to your first question. The FJ-62 is when they switched to EFI. Its the same engine but with EFI. They use an inline 6 that is slow but very dependable. I think it is called the 2FE. Can't remember. Anyway I would get the FJ-62 if your looking for a daily driver. You can always spot a 62 with the square front headlights. The 60's had round headlights. Sometimes you can find a good 62 with everything working for a decent deal. They hold their resale pretty well. The axles on the LC's are also very stout. They have springs under the axles, but have solid axles front and rear. There are a few places to check on lift kits and last time I checked it is hard to find lifts over 3" for this truck (Old Man Emu makes some stuff I think. You might want to check on that if your going to lift it). But you can do a spring over and gain a lot of lift. My 60 had a spring over and 36" super swamper TSL's on bead locks. Probably had 12" of lift.
I personally like the landcruiser better than the 4runner. My wife thinks we should only buy landcruisers from now on. She has a FJ-80 and loves it.

Hey everyone, new to the site and doing a bit of a search to save covering old ground and Snorkelmans post is the closest I found to the info I want. Snorkelman, I've got a HJ60 (round headlights as you correctly put) and would like to go the HJ61 - i've been told but you say 62(different markets perhaps?) headlights - square ones. Do you or anyone else know if these are a straight swap or mods required etc?
Thanks in advance for any help, Clint.

Do not get an Fj62. The fj62 does have EFI but it also only comes in a Automatic. The automatics are hoorible. They are not dependable at all and when they break down they are expensive to fix becuase they are so complex. A used can run you 3500 bucks. Go with the Fj 60. You can get them really cheap and they are dependable. If you want to make either a great daily driver install a 5 speed trany. You can get a brand new one from toyota with a year waranty. It is a lot easier to install in the Fj 60 though.
