The reliable straight six that is in my '84 fj60 isn't cuttin for me, both in horsepower and fuel efficiency(especially at elevation). I wanna put a new(er) toyota engine in it. i have been looking at the 5vzfe v6, the 1grfe v6, and the 2uzfe v8. I do not know much about the engines, whether they will fit, exactly how much modifications will be needed to put one in, stuff like that. If anyone has any knowledge on the subject, drop me a line!

drop in a 3.4 v6 out of a newer yota if you got the money as it is gunna be kinda expensive to come by one i'm sure. i'm not knowledgeable on fj60 as to what would fit and what would't but i would suspect you could cram just about everything in there that you could fit in a pickup. if money was kinda tight for you you could look into a 350 chevy or a 4.3 chevy. i dunno lots of options you just gotta look around and see what you can find at a decent price imho

you are looking at about $2,000 for a engine swap give or take a few $. i would shop around before throwing in another engine. my wifes 86 truck has a 350 and it's nice to have all the power it puts out but she's going to end up braking things a lot faster than if the truck had a v6 or 4cyl. now her truck had the engine in it when i got it. if it was me i wound look in to like fastefficient said header's and thing's like that first. but if you want a v8 Downey, northwestoffroad and advance adapters have lots of good stuff that you will need to do the swap. just my $.02. good luck with your fj.
BTW what size tires and gears are you running. you might just need a gear swap!!!!

Also look into the upgrades available for putting on fuel injection and a header onto the straight six. That old engine has a lot of potential.

If anyone has any knowledge on the subject, drop me a line! Since you don't know what's involved in an engine swap, your best bet would be to use an engine that is frequently used for swaps and has a lot of the parts necessary available (adapters, mounts, etc.). This would be the Chevy 350 V8 and 4.3 V6. Advance Adapters has an extensive line of parts for swaps, check their website.

My dads 67 FJ40 with a spring over, 35's, stock 3 speed, and a 350 build to about..... 375 ponies gets around 8? MPG.... That is a guess though because we havent hooked up the speedo and odometer yet, so it might be better or worse but not much better.... it burns though gas fast. Good luck on convincing the wife!!! Even with the "crappy" 3spd it is sure fun to drive on the street! a little too purdy to off road though

I saw a FJ-40 in my local paper a while back with a 22RE in it. I dont know how they did it, but apparently it has been done.
