I'm curious about the land cruiser. What engine do the pre 1975 FJ40 come with and how good of an engine is it. Might sell my 4runner for one seeing as my 4runner would cost to much to make a better wheeler.

I don't remember the engine #, but I do know that most L/C's came w/the straight 6. A very capable, reliable & bulletproof engine. A buddy of mine has one & it's foolproof. Another buddy in Denver has one w/a 350 that's a trailbeast. While L/C's are cool, I wouldn't want to be the one using it for a D/D. Sounds like you're $$ bound. Have you seen the price on a decent Cruiser lately??? You may change your mind on the Cruiser. My .02. Later...

yeah, clean old cruisers are hard to come by, and the price just keeps on going up.
the engine is a 2F.
its a great motor, but dont expect more than 10 mpg on its best day. and being a '75, it will have a 4 speed, but still dont expect to get on the interstate and go. at 55 that motor is SCREAMING.
it sounds like you have never driven an old cruiser. they are not exactly a DD vehicle. tons of body roll, though not really too bad, but it will be way more than your runner. it is a choppy and bumpy ride, like every bump is a whoops section. of course, better springs and shocks will help a lot, but dont expect too much on road performance. now, get it off-highway, and that is a whole nother story.

100% agreed with joez I have 74 fj40 and 86 4runner But somehow i like 4runner over cruiser both on street ,trail. Well~it's all depend how you build your rig. To me 4runner has more advantage over cruiser.. ;D

I've owned a few 4x's over the years.(CJ,Wrangler,74Bronco,74 FJ40,85 4Runner)currently own 91 4Runner & 95 Extnd cab truck. I MISS my LANDCRUISER MOST!It was THE best of the bunch!that old 2F 6cylinder did guzzle the gas,had decent power though, and was always dependable. My Girly Girl wife used to love to drive it to work too.(work was only a couple miles away)If you can afford to buy one in decent shape,BUY IT!You won't regret it.They are highly capable, tough as hell, easy mods, tons of aftermarket support, great breakover angles.I've owned nothing but,TOYOTA since owning my FJ40.

Didn't the older FJ40s have a 1F that preceded the 2F? And didn't that change around 74 or so? About the same time that front discs were added as well as the change from 3 to 4 speeds, and the t-case ratio was made higher (numerically lower)? And there were changes in the hardtop rear door area as well. Ambulance doors vs. tailgates and so forth. I've never owned one personally, but have been very fortunate to have several in the family and circle of friends. It seems if you own one, you own three!

Those FJ40's are cool I wish I could find one for cheap and fix it to be a beast. Everyone always thinks that they are Jeeps, and are suprised to see Toy on the front

Cruisers switched to the 2f from the f in about 74, 75. I think that there was a half year in there that had either. I have 69 with the three speed that i will never part with. Having said that, I also have a 96 Grand cherokee for daily driving, the cruiser would definitely make a bad morning worse. The simplicity of the mechanicals and the capability off road are what keeps me loyal, in these areas it can not be beat.
