I am considering purchasing a 1995 Land Cruiser. I have had several 4 Runners in the past and they were extremely reliable. The land cruiser that I am interested in has 170k miles on it. Assuming that it was properely maintained.......what kind of longevity can I expect from a land cruiser engine (4. L I-6) with this many miles on it?? The price is certainly right, but how long will it last?
Thanks a Million,

Well it really depends on how well it was maintained. 170K are some high miles. I guess the real question is how many miles do you hope to get out of it and would you be able to perform repairs to keep it going long past 200k. The engine is a good strong engine that has been around for a while. They can reach 200-300k miles if taken care of and maintained. That doesn't mean at some point you might have to buy another short block and have the engine rebuilt. But then your ready to go another 100-200k.
The transmission is also something to consider. Depending on usage and oil changes, they will need attention to reach max life.
I guess what I am saying is that the vehicle can absolutely take you past 200k. But understand the vehicle is at the later part of its life and will need attention as parts reach their expected life. That should go into your financial equations to buy this vehicle.
By the way how much do they want?

They are asking $7995......I think I can get it for $7500 though. I thought I would take it to a dealer and have them go through it thoroughly and give me an estimate to replace everything that could go wrong in the near future. I will need this vehicle to transport my family around in Monterrey Mexico, so I would need it to be reliable. Maybe I should just wait for one to come up for sale with less miles on it!!
Thanks!!

I myself would advise you not to go through the dealer to see what in the near future will need to be replaced. The dealer is a big business, the more money they take in the fatter their wallets get. I would look up to see if Auto PI is in your area. These guys do an amazing point inspection, more then what you could look at, I did it for my truck, and everything he told me was true (leak in the water pump, clutch needed to be replaced, small leak in a radiator line) i mean they are good. They tell you percentge of life you have left in parts, all for like 115 bucks I think, plus they do a title check for you also. You don't have to be there for the inspection, they'll fax everything and the guy will call you right after his inspection. Since they don't do repairs, they're not out to make money. www.autopi.com. I was highly impressed. Chad
