Hey Everybody! Here is my 1982 Toyota pickup longbed 4x4. I just got it about 2 weeks ago for $1200! It has about a 3" suspension lift and rancho shocks (5000?) with 33" mud rovers. Although the 4wd isn't working at the moment, it still rocks in the mud! I have had my eye on toyota 4x4s for years, and I finally got one! Are there any performance mods you guys have put on your trucks you would reccomend? I am in Nor-Cal by Santa Cruz. Once I get the 4wd working I will get you some pics of some serious off roading! .

I'm not sure what is wrong with the 4wd. I know its not the transfer case, because the front driveshaft spins when in 4 wheel drive, but the wheels don't spin. I'm thinking that it is the differentials. If it is I will just replace them with a 5.29 diff from NWOR.

Did you lock in your hubs ? If so then it may be your hubs.

Do both wheels not turn or just one? Lift one tire in the front and one and the back and see if it turns. Then do the same on the other side. Do u hear anykind of noise, or grinding something?

Both of my hubs are locked and neither of the front wheels spin (I found the out while in a mud pit!). You think it could be the hubs? I was thinking diff but I really don't know.

Yea, it sounds to me like hubs, but you never know. Just to let you know if you want to get Warn Hubs they are very expensive, I wanted to buy a pair to better match my rims, but there too much money, and Nice Truck

[glow=red,12,1200]WelcomeAboard Hillbilly[/glow] Hope you enjoy it here.
I had an an 82 for a few years. I bought it with a blown motor and no tranny. And the interrior we won't mention what it looked like. I rebuilt it back up and put 32's on it. I wish I still had it, but I ended up selling it last year. Now I'm down to my 85 and 73 4x's. Hope you enjoy yours for years to come.
As for your 4WD not working I would guess it to be your hubs. The third member (gears) would still spin the wheels unless they where BADLY worn, the ring gear shattered, or the the pinion gear twisted in half. In either of the cases you would hear a nasty whine or clunking sound.
GOOD LUCK

If you got it locked in 4WD then the shaft should not spin without everything else. When you spin it, can you feel any kind of grab like it's rubbing against something or does it just spin free like there's nothing there. I'm wondering if you have a shaddered Brifield or if maybe the guy you bought it from had the axle apart and left something out.
Your best bet might be to just rip into the axle and see what's broken or missing. They're fairly simple, but messy. I'll see about writing something up for you if you need it.
For now though here's a expoleded veiw it.
1. Oil Seal 2. Oil Seal Seat 3. Bearing 4. Steering Knuckle 5. Bearing Cup and Shim 6. Nut, Washer Dowel 7. Oil Seal Retainer 8. Front Axle Shaft (the front half of this which is what you where spining is called the Brifield) 9. Knuckle Spindle and Gasket 10. Dust Cover 11. Dust Seal and Gasket 12. Front Axle Hub with Disc 13. Brake Caliper 14. Brake Line
Hope this helps.

Thanks alot for the diagram. I will probaly end up going through the axle like you reccomended. Is that diagram for a solid straight axle? I will post some pics once I go through it. Thanks for the help!

Yes. In the upper left-hand corner of the pic you'll see the end of the axle. The ball shape at the end of it will be inside the knuckle. Keep track of where your shims go (#4 and #5) and put them back on the knuckle in the same place. Not also ways, but some times this shims might be slightly different in size.
Good Luck
