Hi I am Tom, from Manteca. I Have an 83 Shortbed that has been built from two wrecked trucks. I got it on the road and it was stolen. Then recovered a week later with brand new 33X12.50 BFG MT's on Rock crawlers. The took all the good parts of the engine but left the truck intact. So, it is fixed, on the road and getting better all the time. I have plans to make this a great all around trail rig. I am running 4.88s and 33's and the next thing on the list is a locker. I am concidering the Aussie locker for now until I can save for an ARB or Detroit. I need to rebuild the front axle and have been looking for a good article on how to do it. Also looking for advice on what to replace or build up on the axles. I will take any advice on how to theft proof my rig so that i don't loose another set of tires and wheels. I am in the Military and have done some wheeling over the years and can't wait to get up into the Sierra Nevadas again!

Welcome Tom. Sounds like your truck has been through it all! Here is a great link to rebuilding the front axle. www.4crawler.com/4x4/CheapTricks/AxleRebuild.shtmlAs far as not having it stolen again, I would say get a big dog to live in your truck. You could get a quick bettery disconnect and disconnect the battery when you park it. Or you could learn how to take the shifter out when you park it. That would deter someone from taking it. Maybe you could install some locking device on the parking brake. I'm all for homemade security devices. Check out the rest of the threads for more specific info on your other needs. WELCOME!!

Hey... I really like the battery disconnect. If you don't have a clock to worry about, you could wire up a REALLY HEAVY switch and hide it in the cab. Disconnect the battery when you get out. If it's hidden good enough, the theives shouldn't find it - and if it won't start, they can't steal it, well unless they have a tow truck/roll back, then they could just tow it away which if you think about it the disconnect or any alarm for that matter wouldn't help out anyway would it?

Hey welcome aboard.
In my 79 Firebird I used to have a fuse (flat) connector that I connected to the neutral switch. It stuck up behind the dash and just looked like one of those extra connections for some kind of add-on accessory. When ever I was in a area that I was unsure of I just pulled out the fuse so that no power could go through.
Of course I always liked the idea of a remote switch to electrify door handles or seats. Definitely will change someone’s mind about taking your car/truck. ;D

If you really want theft protection, just duct tape a grenade to the steering wheel and tie fishing line to the pin of the grenade and the door handle. When the unsuspecting theif opens the door, BOOM! Ok, I admit, that might be a little over the top.
