I am about to get my hands on an old Four Winns cruiser. It has a low hours 5.0L v-8. I am thinking about putting this engine in my 83. I have been having a heck of a time trying to find out any information about what needs to be changed to make it work in a truck. Word around the campfire is that marine engines are made a little tougher to withstand the elements and the constant high rpms a cruising boat needs. The obvious issues are intake, exhaust, and cooling system re-routing to a radiator. Does anyone have any experience with this? Will the marine engine bolt up to an automotive tranny? Will the camshaft have to be replaced? If anyone has any thoughts on this let me know, or if you know of a good site with info on it.

how old is the motor. i know some of the older boat motors are reverse rotation. "Also, some ski boats with single engines, mostly Ford 302/351 power plants, used reverse rotation engines so it is a good idea to determine your engine's rotation before visiting the parts department to avoid error." from www.boatpartsinfo.com/engine-rotation.html

My friend is giving me the boat and he is picking it up next weekend. I haven't seen it yet. I also found out that there are several 5.0's. One is a weak chevy 305 that puts out less horsepower than the 4.3 v-6 in my sea ray. One is the ford 302. One is a Volvo. If it is a reverse rotation ford engine or the volvo I suppose I could put it in my sea ray and take the 4.3 out and put it in my truck. If it is the chevy, I will probably just try to sell it.

Be careful about because as you may already know, boat engines are very tough only due to one thing: their huge lack of power! They do have the cc, but not the hp! Look at the difference between a car's 5.7l V8 and a Mercruiser 5.7l V8 for example; the car engine pumps out some 400hp to say the least, and the Mercruiser engine merely gives you 220hp! Is it worth it?
