I have a 97' coma with the 2.7 with a reoccurring misfire problem. Over the last two and a half years there have been three instances where my #3 cylinder has began misfiring. The first time it happened I replaced the plugs and wires and that fixed the problem. It happened a second time about six months later, once again misfiring on the #3 cylinder, I replaced only the #3 plug and that fixed it. About 6 months ago I blew the head gasket, replaced that along with the fuel filter, had the injectors serviced by Witch Hunter, replaced timing chains/guides, belts, plugs/wires ect..... So once again today (with 6 month old pugs and wires) she started misfiring again on #3 cylinder.
Is it just my luck that I have been getting punky plugs in my #3 hole? Should I be looking elsewhere for the cause? Any knowledge is much appreciated.
Thanks!

I went through a simular thing.Only mine was the #4 cylinder.I ended up having to replace the head. You may have to take the head off and check the valves. As well as have a machine shop check the head. You may be luckier than I am and only have to replace the valve assy's.But I do have a Q; Is there any smoke,if so what color is it..? Also check the coil packs to make sure they are working properly.
Another Q. Are you using factory wires and plugs or aftermarket?

I had a shop take a look at the head when I replaced the gasket, they told me everything looked good, especially for a 190,000 mile motor.
I checked the compression after replacing the head gasket and everything was in spec. (i cant remember what numbers I got)
NO smoke.
While im comfortable with my mechanical ability/knowledge, my electrical knowledge is next to nothing. What would I need to do to check the coil packs?

Also,When and if you remove the head to check the valves.Look for stress cracking on the face and look very carefully at the valve seating area's to see if the valves are seating properly and if the are sticking open.Mine did this. One was sticking and another was stuck wide open and wouldn't close. As they get older the valves get worn and get smaller to the point that they wont seat properly(if the valve(s) are bad).My #4 valves got so small that it seemed like they were about to get stuck up in the valve chamber but the other three cylinder valves were normal. If you do end up needing another head shoot me a PM.

I had a tech check them. I don't know much at all when it comes to the electrical stuff. But you can unplug one wire at a time(coil side) to see how it changes or not
I would also recheck the injectors.Just unplug them one at a time to make sure they're delivering fuel to the cylinder.Trust me I've been put through hell and then some with mine and I finally have it running correctly and she runs better than ever.I have replaced just about everything sensors, relays, wiring harness', two heads and a block.
