Allright I got an 82 longbed truck and the motors tired and the 4 speed just isn't working. My dad gave me his 89 toy, wont pass inspection frames gone, but it's got a strong motor with low milage. I don't have a lot of money to spair so I thought I would tackle this on my own but I have one issue and it's the wiring harness. I know i have to install the wiring harness and computer out of the 89 into my 82 but i don't know how compatible the trucks are to each other. The overall picture sounds easy but when I comes down to wiring its not my strongest. What i need to know is are the dashes similar? are the wiring harnesses similar? I don't know. Do i just pull everything out of the 89 and install it all in the dash of my 82? this is my daily driver and i just want it to function like my 87. If anyone has done this before any information would be great Thanks, and keep on wheelin

Since you have the truck the 22re came in, the wiring wont be too bad. Take lots of pictures of the 22re for vacuum hoses and little things. Make sure to get a service manual with a complete wiring schematic in it for the 22re. The wiring for the engine has two harnesses that connect together near the computer. All of the wires in both harnesses are to run the engine and for gauges. Im not sure about how the 82's wiring is but I imagine you could add the 89's harness by splicing into power and ground as well as into the 82's gauge wires. For my efi conversion I left the old harness in the truck and added the efi one. I didnt bother hooking up the gauge wires because I needed it to be driveable. Try to consolidate the efi harness to power, switch, ground and minimal other loose wires before you put it into the truck.
