hi im new to the site. im looking at getting a '88 4runner sr5. the guy that is selling it says it doesn't run but thinks it needs a new starter. it looks pretty good. it has the rusted fenders common to most toyotas. i don't know which engine it has but i do know that it has an automatic tranny. so my question to you all is when i go to look at it what kind of things should i look at? what kind or problems are common for these trucks? i plan to use it for trails and mudding. also assuming i decide to get it is it possible to convert it to a manual tranny? thanks

If you're located anywhere but the southwest USA, frame rust is a major problem. Since they rust from the inside out you don't see it until its bad.
To convert to a manual tranny you'd need a tranny and t-case, clutch pedal set, clutch MC and SC and lines. And probably some other misc stuff I can't think of right now.
