i'm getting ready to smog an 85. i don't know if it came with a check engine light. i belive it's one of the items check for. turn in the key with out cranking should light up all the idiot lights on the dash board. i don't see the CE light on there. thanks in advance, ARQ. 1985 4x4 solid axel carburated engine California UPDATE: Looked it up in the "smog book". The 1985 carburator model(22R) does not show it to have the check engine light entry for it. The dash may come with the bulb for it but it may be to accomodate the FI engine(22RE).

Yeah they do come with one. Mine is on almost every day. It likes to stay on until I shift gears and then it goes off for a while and then comes back on again. They are also helpful for diagnostics of your truck. If you get the OBDII diagnostic tool for it (about $30 from schucks, checkers, kragen) you plug it in and you check engine light will blink morse code for you and you get to translate the blinks. You definately have one, the light is probably just out.

If you havent had the truck long, The light may have been on with the previous owner. I have known folks to take the bulb out of te cluster, its a simple fix to the light on all the time, not neccasarilly a fix for the problem that makes it shine.

where in the dash is it. I can see most of the idiot lights when i shine a light on them but can't locate the CE one.
the truck had been sitting and was missing some smog equipment when i got it. I'll have to spray some bug/spider killer behind the dash before i stick my hand back there. I saw a big a** black widow the other day hanging from the xmember, not sure where it went. havnt seen it since.
thanks, ARQ.

OBDII came out long after 85 model vehicles. To pull the codes, you can short two wires in a plug as described in a FSM. As for the light itself, if you can unhook the speedo cable and the plugs for the cluster lights / gauges the whole thing will come out. From there you can pull which ever bulbs you want. The FSM will (should) indicate which bulb is the CE one.

If it's an SR5 it's on the left next to the Tach about 2 inch's up. Unless you have fuel injection I don't think you'll have a check engine light as there is no computer to throw a code.
