Hey, I am looking at buying my first truck, and for me it has to be a Yota. I found a 1984 with a 4 inch lift kit, 33inch tires some engine upgrades, and two issues- No parking brake, and sometimes it is difficult to take it out of 4 low.
Do you folks have some knowledge of the repair costs of these issues?
Thanks

If the brake lever and front brake line are still there, get a transfercase mounted parking brake. It is supposed to be far better at holding the truck on an aincline and eliminates all the messy hardware on the rear axle. I wouldn't spend $.02 fixing the factory setup, in fact the lift springs you have might have been in the way of the brake lever on the rear axle drums which could explain why you don't have it. Somebody sells the brake lever extensions cheap that allow the parking brake levers to work with taller spring setups and I have used them but I can't remember for the life of me where I bought them from. My All Pro brake showed up by UPS today from All Pro for $236. As far as the transfercase goes, mine is hard at times to get out of 4low but works great at other times depending on the pressure going thru the drivetrain at the time. Moving the truck a little usually solves the issue. If that isn't working I couldn't tell you. Major overhaul kits from Marlin? are something like $350 but you would have to ask if anything in that kit would affect the way it is shifting. You could drop the cash to get the 4.7 gears for the transfercase and would probably discover the shifting issue when you were installing the gears. Even my roommate's brand new Rubicon has to be convinced at times to come out of 4low so it's probably not too far from normal.

Yeah, if you drive forward or reverse about 10ft, you should be able to get out of 4lo. That is what I do.

See if the cables for the E-brake are connected, 4 inch lift? anyway like Speedy said, tranny Ebrake mount and dont waste time on factory. My 83 also hard to get out of low, I do what uscg metioned, back up or forward about 10 and it should slide out. Any slack in the shifter itself?

I talked to the guy and he said that it was actually the part that you stick the key into-The truck was stolen once and a screwdriver was used to start it, so i guess just a new lock and key is what is needed.
