Hey, I am looking to eventually put a Turbo Diesel into a 1982 Toyota pickup. Can you guys tell me some engines that are compatible without too much custom fabbing?
Thanks alot

I've read about swapping in a VW 1.8 TD, but can't remember where.

If you want to stick with a Toyota diesel you should go with a 2LT from 84-87. These motors share the same mounts as the 22R and use the same trannys. You will have to use the tranny from the diesel though as they only work with the newer trannys with removeable bellhousings and not the ones from 82 which are one solid cast case. The 2LT should have enough power to move an 82 around no problem. You could also go with a 3L which is not turbo but I would do the 2LT. They are not a powerhouse but last along time and get good mileage. Better than the 22R.
In my 92 pickup I put a fully electronic 3.0L TD which Toyota calls the 1kz-te. This motor in an 82 pickup would be spectacular but you would have to deal with the wiring. It is a wonderful motor that is full of power, but its a bit more expensive as well. But it is a bulletproof Toyota 4cyl.

4BT cummins is way too heavy. Best to get a motor that will be in the weight range of the truck. A 1kz-te isn't a slouch. Factory rated at 130hp @3000rpm and 230ft lb @2000rpm. If you intercool and do an exhaust mod you can get that up around 300 ft lb and if you chip it over 350. Thats pretty good for a 4 cyl. It runs hard and is good on fuel. Doesn't shake much and isn't too noisey. I'm intercooling mine right now sho I should have an instant power and mileage increase. My hwy mileage should go up to about 33-35 US mpg. It gets out of its own way.
