hello all, I'm new to the forum (I usually lurked around toyota nation until I was referred here) and I have a 1987 toyota 4X4. 22r 5spd. It has been the best truck in the world and just ticked past 270k hard hard miles (woo woo!). recently though (over the past year?) it developed a nasty oil leak. started slow ( a quart every tank), and now spits out a quart per quarter tank. I did some searching and found some info pointing me to a oil pump o-ring as a common failure item in 22r's with high mileage. any second opinions? judging by the slick on my skid plate and in my driveway it is definitely comming from the front of my engine.
thanks in advance guys! -Hill

I have the same issue, and I was told that it is the timing chain cover gasket? Honestly haven't made time to look yet. Definitely looks like its coming out the front of the motor though

id say its the oil pump o-ring or front main seal.

There are a lot of possibilities, maybe as simple as the oil pan, but I'd agree that the main seal or oil pump are the most likely causes. And welcome to the board.

oh, heres a quick kicker for ya. the timing chain gasket set that also includes the oil pump gasket, seal, and o-ring is $2 cheaper than just the oil pump gasket with seal, and o-ring. ($9 compared to $11) either way with all the oil I've been losing it'll pay for itself in a week!

1 can of wd-40 1 can of "break free" 1 twisted socket extension 1 burst 19mm socket 2 broken breaker bars 4 cans of beer and 1 still stuck crank bolt later.
the score is: oil leak=1 - hillbilly=0 (this is humilliating)

I always use a deep impact socket and breaker bar. Lay the breaker bar against the frame and crank the motor. Havent had one not come out yet. I've heard nightmare stories of these thing not moving and done tons of them without issue this way.

well, the frame and starter trick didnt work, a few more cans of various penetrating oils didnt work and a torch didnt work. I ended up buying a chain from home depot and chaining the crank pully to the motor mounts. It was rated at 250lbs or so and it broke once, but I eventually got the bolt out and changed the gaskets. and (dun dun dah!) the oil leak stopped.
If I could offer any advice to anyone thinking of doing this same job I would say. get an oil pan gasket too, you're pretty much going to have to take the pan off anyways.
have a timing gun handy. I had to pull the distributor to get a bolt under the cam fuel pump eccentric.
and do it on a day when you have no other plans.... it took me about 8 hours. (I could probably do it again in less but if this leak comes back I'll probably just keep buying oil)
just my $.02 Hill
