I'm looking to buy an off road vehicle that will accommodate my family of 4. I'd mostly be going on old mining roads and jeep roads in Montana to start. What is the best stock rig to get me started. Which is the best if I want to add mods later on, or should I look for something that already has work done to it? Are Runners as capable as Tacos? Sequoias vs. Tundras? The budget is about $10K, maybe a bit more.

You can buy 90's 4Runners for way cheaper than the trucks, I don't really know why the price is so different. I have found beauty V6 runners with 5speed trannys, little rust, and great shape for $3000-$4000

I have also noticed that the 4runners are cheaper than the pickups. Is there any advantage of one over the other for off roading?

I am going to be in the market for my second Toyota around Christmas. My budget is going to be around $10000 as well. The price on 4Runners lately is looking good. However I am completely forgetting about any 4Runner with the 3.0 v-6. I haven't heard a single good thing about that engine. I am looking at 97 to 2001 Runners. Lots of stuff out for them. Lots of capability stock. The 3.4 is a good, strong, reliable engine that can be made better with a supercharger. I am not a big fan of IFS but Total Chaos has IFS options and several people have SAS options for the front axle that I would use to raise it up a bit. There are actually a bunch of deals to be had for Landcruisers as well. Seems like 93 to 98 are the years to have. You could hook up with one of those as cheap or cheaper than alot of the Tacomas. The only thing that holds me back is the gas mileage which is bottom of the barrel for Toyotas. The good things are that you can find one with lockers and solid axles stock, plus they are extremely nice vehicles used the all over the world as a off road vehicle. Given that I already have a good rock-crawler, I am leaning towards a potentially good expedition vehicle rather than a truck.

Thanks Speedy, that gets me headed in the right direction. I don't really need a truck or rock crawler. What I need is an expedition vehicle, Something capable off road to haul people and gear, and the runners seem a bit small. I'm not too concerned with mileage because I'll probably only drive it between 4000 and 6000 miles a year. Do the land cruisers come with lockers standard, or is it an option? I'll look on the board elsewhere for this, but what do you gain with solid axles over IFS? (can you tell I'm a newbie?)

If you take your time when looking into the LC's they come with a few set-ups.A fully loaded one can come with front/rear lockers and a center dif lock.

Ok, after looking around a bit I am decided on the Land Cruiser 95 -97 or the Lexus lx450 96 - 97. Somehow the lexus seem to be a bit cheaper and lower miles. I'm finding vehicles split with 90k to 120k miles, and 150 to 180k miles. What is it worth to go with the lower miles? Anything special to look out for at 150k plus?
