i have a 81 Sr5 long bed, i will put a 22r in it , what is the best transmission/ tranfercase to go with, i looked at marlins website and they have a hd version of the 5 speed thats in it ,which i think-is a L 52 , it makes no difference to me if i have to move the cross member or not i just want the better of the Toyota trans/transfer-cases, and also i will be adding a marlin crawl case if that makes a difference

An R151F from a 22TE is the strongest, but will be very hard to find. Next would be a W56 from a 22RE equipped truck. Next would be a G52 or G54 from 84-88 carbed truck.
What ever you get, get the t-case too.

If you have the $$, but it's beyond overkill to stick one behind a 22R, unless you plan on some serious, serious abuse.
A W56 is more than strong enough for a 22R, way easier to find, and much cheaper. If you find a W56-A or B (85, 86-88 22RE equipped trucks) you can use the RF1-B t-case from your 81. The later W56's (89-95) use a forward shift t-case, so you'd need the t-case too.

what did toyota stick that r151f behind if they are that stout, or did they just discontinue them because they would never tear up and not to add to much to this but my 81 fuel tank might need replacing are they the same on up through the years or did they change as well

what did toyota stick that r151f behind if they are that stout ... as above : An R151F from a 22RTE is the strongest, but will be very hard to find. 22RTE (turbo 22RE) was only available 86-87, and maybe 1 out of 100 trucks was turbo.
