Driving a 94 22re stock
So for a few weeks now when I'm just idling, the idle speed just bounces, from about 1000 to 1400. It mostly does it before the truck is fully warmed up, but occasionally it does it even after its been warmed up. I've tried searching for any ideas, but haven't really come up with any, except maybe the o2 sensor. So any advice is greatly appreacited.

One possibility is that the TPS(throttle position sensor) is going bad. This happened to my 99, but mine was jumping from 1000rpm to almost 3000rpm and only did it at idle.

I have heard this issue a few times pop up around here. Like HOODLUM said the TPS could be one of the issues. Personally when this happened to me it was in my brake booster. Especially when i had foot on break and A/C was on drawing extra vac. Another thing is chekc all your vac hoses. When they get old they tend to dry rot and crack. And what happens to rubber when its cold....it gets hard and the cracks arent as plyable.
Good luck.

Thanks for all the advice guys. But turns out, it was just low on coolant. I knew I had a coolant leak, but didn't realize it would do that to the idle.

It makes somewhat sense. Since cool is ran through the sensor for the cold start injector under the intake plenum.

There's a number of things that can cause the "pulsating idle" syndrome. One of the most common ones (22RE related) is when the idle RPM is too high.

I messed around with idle screw a few times even to the point the truck wanted to shut off. the truck i think has a after market A/C. I even had to mess with the idle up setting on the A/C. now I had to put a return spring on the linkage to help bring down the idle it got to the point the idle screw was only good for upping the idle and not bringing it down. the factory spring seemed in good shape but it now needs a little help! but like you said FOURWD there is a lot of things that can cause the syndrome. I just have not found the true problem for mine! later!

Cleaning the throttle body goes a long way in these things. Mine used to surge RPM at idle when it got cooler out about 2 minutes after it was started only at idle. Once it hit full hot it went away. Cleaned the T-body, turned the idle bleed screw in till the idle went way down and set idle at full hot to 800rpm's. Never had a issue after that and I set all of them I do like this. Like fourwd1 said tunring the idle to high is know for making the trucks surge.
If the Throttle body is gummed up it might cause your needing another spring issue as well. Gunk builds on the pivot pin in the t-body or on the blades making it stick. Not a bad ideal to check and make sure the vain in the AFM isnt sticking at all. This will also cause surging issue's on these motors if it hangs up or sticks a little. AFM contorl fuel metering and can make the engine try and run lean or rich depending how its hanging up. Yopu can clean the thottle body with some 2+2 cleaner or throttle body cleaner and the AFM with electical cleaner.

I have a similar idle hunting issue on occasion as well. I hear that if the idle air controller fails then you have hunting issues...havent looked too much into it yet though. I am assuming these 22RE's have these idle valves? could this be a cause? I beleive the idle air control valve is a solenoid operated valve that lets air by-pass the closed (at idle) throttle plate, and allows the car to idle. The Idle speed is then adjusted by the computer by opening and closing the valve. It seems logical that this could be a cause of the hunting, but again it is just a stab in the dark. Another thing i thought might be a potential cause of my idle issues, and other little engine burps (engine lurches a bit while driving), is that my 300,000 miles has caught up to the mass air flow sensor...might be time for a new one? will try replacing that at somepoint, but toyota is quoting 800$ for a replacement...gonna look around a bit...
