Hi everyone, just found this site when looking for a new truck. I just had my 97 taco recalled so I am on the market for a new ride. I am thinking about buying an early 90's 4runner and doing a 3-5" lift, wheel, tires, bumpers, rails, rack, etc. I was wondering what you guys thought were the best setups to use, companies, websites, etc. Pretend you have a few thousand to spend on mods and tell what you would get.
Thanks for any and all info Cabe

Well Cabe, what do plan on doing with the truck? Is it a dd as well? As a rule of thumb, stay away from the 3.0 v6. The 22re is a lot harder to find in those but its worth it.

wouldn't the v6 be fine if the headgasket was recently replaced? I thought that was the only issue with them

Also, some good companies that make toyota stuff are all pro offroad, marlin crawler, downie offroad, LC engineering, Wabfab, plus others i can't think of right now

The timing belt on the v6's are another common point of failure, not to mention the overall design of that engine is poor. If those things were recently replaced it could be fine for many miles. Those motors in general just don't have a good track record.

Yeah, after talking to some friends, I have been hearing a lot of that stay away from the 3.slows. It will be my daily driver, but I don't have to drive a ton, so it will also be wheeled on a pretty steady basis. I am thinking that I might just go with an FJ40 or FJ60 with the 350 engine swap instead but I am not positive. I really like the 4runners, but it looks like I need something with the 3.4 to be satisfied, and then it is too new, so I will need to sink a bunch of money into it doing the solid axle swap.

Also look into the early 90's fj80s. Solid axles, factory locker options and they are overall pretty reliable.

I would get a 22re or 3vze 22re with some gear does just fine...350 sbc would be good but it has to have the dt to stand up to the extra power...why not drop the 350 into the runner
