I picked up a 93 4X4 PU from a good friend of mine that was once his sons truck. The truck has 97K on the engine and I believe the engine blew a head gasket. My problem is I dont know which route to take, put a new engine in it or rework the engine myself. When I picked up the truck the head was removed and there is definitely water in the oil. Unfortunately I am unable to talk to his son because they are not on good terms. I am short on funds so would be cheaper for me to do the work myself?

My first piece of advice is to look into the timing cover and see the condition of the timing chain guides and the inside of the cover. If the driver's side guide is broken, the timing chain will contact the cover, wearing grooves into it. The worst point of contact is the water pump cavity. After a period of time running like this, the groove will wear through. When the engine is running, the water is forced through the groove (or crack) into the oil pan. This is commonly mistaken for a blown HG. Timing cover/ guide sets are sold pretty resonably, and installation and reassembly of the engine are not too difficult. Get a haynes or Chilton manual. their instructions are pretty detailed, and give a lot of illustrations to support.
