and it wouldnt cost me a dime....
I have a 1987 22r, I'm poor, and very bored... the plan is: to gather parts from pick and pull as I see em with the ultimate goal being a 22RE "swap"
I put swap in quotes because I was going to do this while removing as little as possible from my current engine. the question is: do I need RE heads or will the RE manifold bolt up to my R heads?
is the cam from a cellica different than a truck?
really, out of all this I am looking for gas mileage, horsepower, reliability and above all entertainment (there'll be beer involved)
sound reasonable? and more importantly: if I made a Johnny cash reference, would anybody get it?
thanks! -Bill
ps I ran a search but... no joy. I know this has been brought up before...

I did something very similar, an 87 22r to a 22re. The re intake bolts right up to the r head and Im using the r cam. I got some "re" parts off ebay but they were different than what i expected. Im sure they were for a car instead of the pickup. I had to buy the truck parts as well to make everything work. Since Ive done the swap, I have gotten way better milage, up to 25 on a motor with over 280k miles. Look at posts of other people who have done the swap (pirate4x4) and get a FSM. I did mine for a few hundred and it works great.

good info about the car/truck differences. I've been robbing the parts from celicas because all the pickups/4-runners here are v-6 or stripped bone dry (I might have to change that plan then...) its almost as if no one knows/cares that the celica had the r/re motor...

You could probably do the swap with the car parts but you may have to get a little creative with the wiring.

oh, shoot. thats not a problem. I though stuff wouldnt bolt to other stuff or something. To be honest I was planning on running with a "megasquirt" anyways so I'll be b*lls deep in wiring as it is.
thanks again!
