I just bought a 2005 Tacoma, crew cab, 6cyl, 4L, and I am getting very poor fuel mileage. From what I have read online, I should be getting anywhere from 14mpg to 20 mpg. I am right now getting about 9mpg, thats right I am getting about 300km on an 80L tank, when I should be getting 500+. My S-10 was getting better mileage than that, and we all know how great those 4.3's are on gas?. The air filter was very dirty, so I replaced it with a K&N, but that made no difference at all. So I was just wondering what kind of mileage should be getting and what can I do to fix the problem? Right now the truck is stock with TRD and SR5 packages, no modifications or aftermarket parts other than the K&N filter.

How many miles on the truck? Any acceleration problems? What pressure do you run the tires at?

The truck has 125000kms, so about 78000 miles, acceleration seems fine, but this being the only Tacoma that I have driven I have nothing to compare it to. And my tires are at 30psi, the truck reccomends 29psi, 1psi is going to make that big of an affect. I am going to replace the plugs, to see if that makes any change and I'm not getting an engine light, so that pretty much cancels out the O2 sensors.

I had to ask the basics first. I would start with a basic tune-up.Plugs wires, pcv you already did the air filter.

Lift up the truck one wheel at a time and make sure none of them are dragging. The Taco I bought might have seen a little flood action. The brakes were so rusted that they were constantly grabbing the rotor. You could barely turn one of the wheels. I cleaned them, replaced the retaining pins for the pads, problem gone! While I doubt that's your problem, it's a possibility. It could also identify wheel bearing issues.

You could try changing the fuel filter as well.
