I am currently running a 86' Toyota 4Runner and it is to slow for my liking. I am planning on swapping out the engine for a 3.4 L Toyota V6 engine. I was wondering if I would be able to still run my current transmission or would I need to replace mine. If I need to replace it what would be the easiest and best transmission to use under a 1st generation 4Runner that was built for a 22RE.

Check out www.offroadsolutions.com They closed up shop but still have alot of excellent info on what you need and the type of tranny you should use. I believe they recommend the tranny that comes with the 3.4 or the tranny that comes with the 3.0 v-6. R-151 and R-150. Not sure which tranny comes with which engine. I think the 3.0 v-6 tranny is setup to work with a 23 spline input on a gear driven transfercase. The 3.4 tranny will work with a chain driven case.
