I picked up a 93 4x4 PU with a blown head gasket with the head already removed. How do I know if the previous mechanic set the #1 piston at TDC on the compression stroke? If I am looking from the front of the engine the #1 and #4 pistons are raised. How would I set the #1 piston at TDC with all the components removed? Any advice will help.

One and four up would be Compression. - The DIMPLE on the crankshaft gear should be at 6 o clock and the dimple on the camshaft should be at 12 -o clock and should be lined up up with the shinny link on the chain. You may want to consider getting a repair manual, such as a Hayes Repair manual,it contains alot of good information and needed engine and torque specs. -GOOD LUCK

Thanks for the replys, it looks like it was already set at TDC. Last night I found some wear on the timing chain cover, it looks like the guide had failed. I read if the wear is to deep it would provide a place for antifreeze to mix with the engine oil. Luckily it doesnt look to deep. Do you guys recommend installing the timing chain guides with the metal backs? Where is a good place to get them?

The timing chain guide issue is kind of a personal preference. How long do you plan on keeping the truck? How many miles per year, the shape the body is in. Just a personal opinion - I would focus on a quality head gasket - Run a metric tap down the head bolt holes. Take the Head to a machine shop. to make sure it is not cracked. If you have some extra cash, I would consider going with STUDS instead of using Head Bolts.Be careful when you torque the bolt that goes from the head to the timing cover,it strips out very easily. There is a special tool for adjusting the rockers. - VERY time saving and a more accurate setting - less stressful

You may be able to purchase one at Auto Zone. You need to talk to the right person at the counter so you dont end up purchasing a complete set costing around $300,00. The tool I purchased had to be ordered. The tool is made by - GOODSON the part #88800 - MAKE SURE YOU GET THE 12mm. If you have any questions, you can call them at - 1-800-533-8010 - 1-507-452-1830 or visit the web site - w.w.w.Goodson.com Something else you may want consider when you replace the Head Gasket -Replace the radiator cap with a 9 lb instead of the 13 lb.
