Well I finally figured it out!
i've got an 87 4runner, 22re with auto tranny. Ever since i bought the truck from the tow yard I used to work at, it's had a sputtering problem when you give it a little throttle. its usually between 1200 and 1600 rpms. It idles fine, sputters with a lil gas, but give it a lil more and it stops.
I dont have a whole lot of money to be buying new parts, so I've been swapping parts with other used ones. I replaces the TPS, and set it correctly. I swapped out the AFM because I got an error code on that onces, but a new one didnt fix anything.. Replaced plugs, Rotor and cap are clean as a wistle, plug wires are practically new.
Anyways, to make a long story short, I've traced it down to the EGR, or the egr filter. I took apart the filter and cleaned it, blew and sucked on the openings (which dont taste good at all), and it sounds like the valve in there is crap. I tested the EGR by what the Chilton's says, to hook a direct vaccume line to the top of the EGR, and if the engine stalls its still good, and which it did still.
So its the filter right? there's two vaccume lines leading from the throttle body to it, a P and R.. hose P is the problem, i take it off and no sputter! if I keep P on and take off R, there's a suction, so I'm assuming that these two lines work in conjunction with eachother to open the valve?
Who else has had similar EGR problems? I know I can just block the thing off, until I need it smogged again at least, but I've been told my a buddy with a smog certificate, that taking it out will destroy my mileage, which is about 14 city, 17-18 highway on a good day. Is that true? I noticed that this only does it after the engine has reached operating temp, so what about BVSV?
I dont know a whole lot about this system, and advice will do!
