I am going to buy a 2000 or newer tacoma 4x4 and dont know what to get the 2.7 or the 3.4 I want to know what kind off gas mpg I can expect and how mush power does the 3.4 have over the 2.7.

Gas milage is about the same with the 2.7 having the edge give or take a couple MPG's.The 3.4 def has more power and torque. But the 2.7 is easier to work on.

I have a similar question pertaining to the 6 cyl. I have a 95 Tacoma with 2.7 L and when new routinely got 25 mpg. Now with over 200,000 miles I'm getting 20 to 22 on the highway depending on hills and speed. I'm thinking of buying a new Tacoma and can't decide if I want to go with the 6 cyl. I've been very happy with the 2.7 L (zero repairs) but can't get the locking rear end unless upgrade to the six. I hate to give up the gas mileage since the brochure says the six only gets 19 mpg. About the same mileage a full size Tundra/Ford/Chevy get with a V8! I can tell you the 2.7 L has plenty of power off road and can easily go 70 on highway towing small enclosed U-haul trailer full of furniture (approx 2000 lb).

I've a 98 taco with a 2.7 after switching to 4:88's for gears sitting on 33 BFGs it dominates alot of the other yotas in my local area that have othe 3.4 not only does it have more power i'm averaging 21 mpg after alls said and done hell just last week i got a phone call for a recovery of a 97 ford f-350 that had a busted front axle my little 2.7 pulled him outta the whole and up the hill climb i'm impressed and hooked i'll never go back to anything but.
