i have a 88 4runner with the 3.0 and it needs rebuilt but i've heard nothing but bad things about this engine and the 22r seems to get the glory. what do you think about each engine? i would like to keep my engine but idk if its going to be worth it in the long run. whats the problem with these engines? would it pretty easy to swap in the 22re? thanks for the help in advance.

ive owned 3 3.0's now. done the headgaskets on one. but not any of them has ever failed me. so i cant really complain. i dont know why you'd wanna put a 22r (carb) in that. id stick with the 22re (fuel injected) or the 3vze (3.0 v6)
22re swaps are not hard to do but time consuming. it all depends on your budget and skills
honestly i'd just rebuild the 3.0. (how do you know it needs a rebuild?)
if your gonna go crazy with swapping a 22re you might as well just put a chevy 4.3 in it
just my opinion

Any engine swap is a lot of work. Since its not a straight bolt in deal i would hesitate describing it as "not hard". The 4.3 is a POS. All kinds of bottom end issues.
Rebuilding what you have is pretty much always going to be easier then doing a swap to something different.
