1987 22r completely stock w/capacitive ignition (incase that counts)
I just got back from Cline ranch near san antonio and had a blast, but it looks like I might have some carb issues to address.
seems like everytime I really get to pounding on the front end (like trying to bump myself up a shelf or a step up) I start chuggin and blowin black smoke... (I started to refer to it as carb shock) if I floor it it'll bog and sound like a tractor for a bit but eventually clear up... same thing happens up steep steep inclines.
fuel injection is in the works but what can I do to fix this now?
-Bill
ps on a lighter note, my COMPLETELY stock toy on bald tires hung with most of the big boys all day, did some stuff they couldnt (and vice versa) and I only ALMOST had to be winched once... almost.

Runs fine otherwise? If so then your "carb shock" is just what carbs do. At a certain point of incline carbs cant get the fuel out the way they normally do which results in sputter. As for the black smoke, thats just unburnt fuel, probably from being splashed out of the fuel bowl in the carb and being passed straight through the engine. My 87 did the same thing on a steep hill before I switched to EFI

The best mod I did to help with the carb issue was to install lower transfercase gears. It is keeping my engine speed up when I am climbing. Although if I have to stop in the middle of a climb I have the same problem you have. Propane injection would eliminate the issue even better than fuel injection, but I don't want to have to find propane fill up stations. Never been to Cline Ranch, it's a crying shame we can't legally wheel in Devil's Den. I am heading out to Hidden Creek in Marble Falls this weekend.

sounds like I'm gonna have to kick this EFI swap into high gear then. bummer is, last time I was able to make a pick-n-pull run there were no 22RE's there (go figure)
speedy: yeah, it is a bummer about the den. I went out there once or twice when I had my chevy... kinda wish I had better guides then, the people I went with were only interested in the two mud holes they had there (I like trails better) poke around saoffroad.com the clientel is young, but they have some pretty cool meets. and I've never been hidden creek. is it a OHV park or just a cool place?

Extend the bowl vent so it sits higher in the air cleaner. Usually fuel sloshes from the bowl out the vent and into the carb. If the vent is extended you can prevent splash over.

No. The bowl vent is the round metal tube that comes up out of the fuel bowl, inside the carb.

roger, will do. it'll be a while before I can get any feed back on the fix though... I'm getting married in a month and wont be able to wheel it for a few months afterwards... (gotta break her in slow) hopefully I'll have better luck with the hill climbs then though. thanks for the help.

Hey bro, that park is a ORV park, full size rigs, motorcycles, 4 wheelers, shooting range. All the good stuff. Might be out there tomorrow, but definitely Friday. Good luck with the woman, and the carb!
