Hi everyone, My uncle just got two yotas, both solid front axel trucks and one efi and one carb. I dont know what years they are but the carb one is a regular cab with a skyjacker lift, looks like 6 inches or more. The other is a ext cab with a locked up efi motor. He wants one of them for a play toy, beater, trail rig basher and i told him he would want the standard cab for that due to shorter wheelbase plus you wouldnt have to swap the lift over. The regular cab truck runs but has been stripped of interior and all wires, doors, fenders, and misc parts here and there. My question is can the efi stuff like complete wire harness, dash, fuel pump, fuse box be swapped over to the non efi truck, what is different on the engine from the carb to efi. Will the efi system bolt right up, Ive never messed with toyotas as this will be my 1st but it shouldnt be to terrible. The ext cab truck is complete but the bed and cab is shot as in rusted to bits. Im very mechanically inclined for i have a samurai and a xj i rock crawl, trail ride with so i should be able to tackle this job. If anyone has done any of this let me know i want to start on it this week so i can get the axels outta the ext cab truck so my samurai can grow past 31s lol

Yes this is a common swap. It's time consuming but not a difficult job.Try the Search tool here this has been covered and there is plenty of detailed info available.

yes, this is an easy 1 of the easier swaps, but when you remove the mechanical fuel pump, you must make a block off plate and install it in its place,i took a small piece of 1/4 " aluminum cut it on a band saw to about 3"x3" square, drilled 2 holes,a little gasket cement,it worked perfectly.i believe thats the only issue,i did it so long a go dont remember!

... My question is can the efi stuff like complete wire harness, dash, fuel pump, fuse box be swapped over to the non efi truck, what is different on the engine from the carb to efi. Will the efi system bolt right up ... The EFI has an electric fuel pump in the tank, and it won't swap to the carbed tank, so it's best just to swap the complete tank and high pressure line. The other thing is, depending on what year the carbed engine is, there may not be a place for the knock sensor.

There could be other issues. The early carbed engines didn't all have the provisions to bolt the efi intake to the carbed head. My 83 head doesn't have the correct bolt holes to attach to an efi intake or I would have done the swap long ago. The heads and engine block can also be different heights. Early 22R heads and blocks are NOT interchangeable with later 22R or 22RE heads and blocks. This changed in 85 I believe. All 85 and later 22R and 22RE heads and blocks ARE interchangeable. Make sure the intake will bolt up before you waste too much time on changing over EFI components. If you have an early 22R, your only option is to buy a head, probably from LC Engineering, that has the bolt setup for the EFI from your other truck, or find a rare 84 Celica GTS that has the EFI setup and head that works with the older engines. I found and bought an 84 Celica GTS only to find out the engine was beyond the cost/effort threshold to try and make it work.
