i rebuilt my engine this last year because of a timing chain problem. after i rebuilt it i had trouble getting it timed where it needed to be. the distibutor is set all they way advanced because that is the only way it will run with any power at all. it runs perfectly fine other than when i stomp on it it slowly gain speeds and then bamb it takes off. ive thought it could be a computer problem, problem in the wiring harness, or something in my efi intake. ive takin it to our local toyota dealer to even mess with it and they are completely up in arms with no idea. any one have any idea what could be the problem?

Almost sounds like either the distributor needs to be moved - the timing gears are not lined up correct or the igniter or the plug going to it is bad. You should not have to advance the distributor all the way to get the engine to run. Are you using a jumper wire on terminals - TE1 AND EI when you set the timing? A starting point would be - Pull #1 PLUG - bring the timing mark to TDC - Pull the distibutor cap and make sure the rotor is lined up right. One tooth off is going to make a difference. You may want to consider removing the rocker arm cover to make sure the cam gear is in the correct spot. If the timing is not set correct that = the timing is not advancing which = poor performance. TRY hooking up a timing light- with the timing set correct -Rev the engine up slightly and see if the timing advances. If you cant get the timing to advance - Have the ignitor tested and check the plug going to it. The IGNITOR sends a message to the computer which controls the spark advance. The IGNITOR is that little box located on top of the coil. BE CAREFUL HANDLING THE IGNITOR,THAT LITTLE BOX COST OVER TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS. GOOG LUCK

everything you said there has been done, even with the ignitor box... the toyota machanic told me how to do it with a paper clip in both inserts. the weird thing is the timing is dead nuts on and is perfectly set TDC. thats why it is leaving us dumbfounded. the toyota dealership here hooked up everything to a computer and they said everything is fine... its irritating. do you thing the ignitor box could be bad? would that make the difference? o also take note that i rolled the truck before into a pond so would the water/mud make a difference on it?

You stated you rolled the truck in a pond - How long ago? Was the cab submerged? Over a period of time -not overnight - when the wiring and electronics are exposed to water corrosion can develop ie- ground wires, connectors ect. When the igniter is bad.the engine will start and run fine.but during accleration, the engine will gain speed slowly, but you will not experience a sudden surge in speed. Did you check to see if there are any codes stored in the Diagnostic system?
