When I put the heat on in the truck the my temp gauge goes from 1/3 to 2/3 in a matter of 4-5 minutes and it stays there unless I turn the heat off, then it takes about 8-9 minutes to cool back off, and this is on the freeway. It also seems that when i run the heat it looses fluid a little. I can't smell antifreeze in the cab and I just replaced the heater hoses (same problem before and after). I also just replaced the radiator cap.
Any ideas?

Sounds like a Heater core issue. Have you noticed if the floor on the passenger side is wet? Are you running the fan when this occurs? The fan motor may have issues, putting a major overload on the alternator which = overheating

It does it when the fan is on or off, so it isn't the fan. The floor isn't wet on the passenger side. It doesn't smell like antifreeze, but there may be some issue with it non-the-less. What about the proportioning valve? Thanks for the help. I'm usually good with engine issues, but I've never had to work on the heat system before.

Did you replace the thermostat? The thermostat includes a type of automatic valve operated by fluctuations in the coolant temperature. IF the valve is sticking, the coolant WILL NOT flow through the radiator causing heat issues. This might explain why this happens, when you use the heater.
