So I got crazy last week and bought a banged up 88 4runner v6, ostensibly for my daughter to drive to work over the summer, but also to build up into a family camping wagon. 204,000 miles. First phase plans: - Replace valve cover gaskets--leaking something awful
- Replace windshield
- Fix or replace tailgate
- Upgrade audio system
- Install Yakima roof rack system from the old Toyota
- Go fishing!
Second phase plans - Add CB
- Offroad bumpers
- Fender flares (to cover up beginnings of rust)
- Hellas
I could go on, I know but I'm on a budget, you know. Any good sources for bumpers and flares? Tailgates? Any interesting mods? Any pitfalls with this model?

When was the head gasket done? This is the only issue that I'm aware of.Maybe some of the others will chime in but that's what I know about them. But it sounds like you have a good plan layed out and it should be fun.As far as bumpers go it depends on what your want/needs are.You can get heavy duty plate steel bumpers or go with the lighter tube style.Junk yards will be your friend as far as body panels go.

Unlike some people ;D I'd like to welcome you to TOR. And while I'm at Happy Father's Day
Also check the frame for rust. Especially near the mid section.
