hey all! got a few questions for ya
1980 20r currently 4spd. looking for a 5spd bolt in. or atleast one that will eventually bolt in with work.
when I bought this truck I was told it had "the lower gears" (in the diffs) for this year. were there multiple gear ratios offered for this year, and what might they be? (if no one knows I'll spin the tire and count driveshaft rotations... but its over 100 degrees outside right now)
looking for a winch bumper for the front and I'm comming up empty handed. dont want the tube frame bumpers, looking for something like what "fat mouse" offered on the '86 and newer section of this forum (did you see it? it was beauty). any ideas? just want something I can stand on, that'll hold a winch, and no tubes.
thanks for the help! -Hill

Well if you were closer I have a 5spd G series trans.I'm in S.E. PA. If you can PM me the vin number I can usually tell you what gears are in the difs or if the vin plate is still in tact on the firewall it should be there as well. For the bumper I'm not sure but try Bentup.com they sell plate bumpers but I don't remember if they offer them for older model trucks.(I can't access their web page at work)

That sucks. AJ makes good bumpers.I have one on my Tacoma and really like how it's held up to my abuse.

hey all! got a few questions for ya 1980 20r currently 4spd. looking for a 5spd bolt in. or atleast one that will eventually bolt in with work. The L50 5 spd from a 81-82 or the L52 from an 83 is a direct bolt-in. The G series from 84-88 will bolt up, but they use a forward shift t-case, so you'd need the t-case too. Also they are longer so you'd have to relocate the x-member a bit, and maybe need some driveshaft work. The only gear ratio available in 80 was 4.38

L50 or L52 it is. I could use my current transfer case with that?
moving the x-member and shortening the driveshaft wouldnt be that much of a hassle but I like the idea of a direct bolt in. the only thing I was worried about was shifter location and having to cut new holes...
4.38 roger that, thanks.

ok, next question. whats involved in changing an "inner axle seal"? its the front axle passenger side.
any specialty tools needed?

The only special tool would be a 54mm (2 1/8") socket. You do have to pull everything off to get to it.

thats crazy... I actually own a 54mm socket! its the same size as a flywheel bolt on a rotary engine...

Sweet!
and BTW, to avoid any confusion, I meant you have to pull everything to get to the seal, not the 54mm nut.
And the biggest challange will be the cone washers holding the locking hub on.
