i got a lifted 93 toyota, i recently put it into a tree an tweaked my axel, broke some shit.. i was thinkin id slap an older straight axel under her an get her back on the road. i havnt done a straight axel swap before and i was wondering how they fit up, what kinda modification i might have to make to the mounts etc. is it a huge task or should it be pretty straight forward? get back at me, and if there is a certain year axel i should try an get ahold of. id appreciate any input you can give. Thanks in advance, Mitch

Whether it's a huge task or straight forward depends on your skills and tools for cutting, welding, and grinding. If you can do that it's not that difficult, especially nowadays when there are so many SAS kits available. Any year axle (79-85) will do, but the newer ones have more gussets added for strength right from the factory. But you can add gussets to any one, so don't lock your sights on an '85.

so i ended up finding a complete, great shape '85 solid axle in my area using craigs list. last weekend my buddy and i set to work on the job at about 6 o'clock after work armed with a couple cases of beer and all the cutting and welding devices needed and had her sittin on this axle that came complete with stock leaf springs by 1:30AM. problem we didnt expect was i had installed a high steer crossover kit on the axle before mounting it and the old 85 leaf springs were so shot they would buckle completly under the pressure of the truck, causing the oil pan to rub on the steering tie rod. realising this we wedged some lift blocks i had sitting around between the frame and the axle till i could get my hands on my lift springs. no luck yet, but iv posted a thread for help on locating the rear leaf springs needed to set her up right, the front end should be no problem as long as i can find my rear leaves for the 6"-7" lift i plan to put under her... ill post the few pictures i have from my axle conversion in the next couple days, and i plan to document the rest of the project better with pictures in case your interested in following the progression. iv been told i may have to use some chevy leaves to get the ride i height i want, but im hoping to get some toyota intended leaves. any help/advice you can give on rear leaves would be greatly appreciated! -Mitch
