I hear that royal purple is the best oil you can run, but cost is high. I have a newly rebuilt engine and im going to pick a oil to run. I know mobil1 is high quality and thats what i have run on other engines of my. Any FACTS or OPINIONS?

More $ = better oil. Independent studies have shown that the more u spend the better quality oil u get. I run castrol synthetic in my runner its no royal purple but still a good synthetic.

yeah i hear good things about castrol. I think mobil one is my prefrence, other than royal purple. Im not revving this engine to 7k so i think the extra protection isnt needed.

Can't really go wrong with any synthetic. If you look at what the nascar guys run a lot of them are using Joe Gibbs Racing oil. Its expensive and not the easy to find but available in several different formulas. Royal Purple is more popular with the drag guys which is why you can buy it in straight weights.
Mobil 1 was at one time the standard in synthetic oil and was used extensively in all types of racing from the drag strip to the Quaker state sponsored Nascar and even Penske Racings Indy cars. Its popularity has waned with rise of specialty synthetic oils.
One thing to consider is that all regular store brand conventional and synthetic oils have less and less zinc and moly additives which make it hard for a flat tappet cam to live. To break in a motor with a flat tappet use either a specialty oil like from Joe Gibbs break in oil with a high zinc content or buy a break in additive available from all major cam manufacturers. Cam manufacturers like Comp Cams are actually recommending using a half bottle of break in additive with every oil change after initial break in to avoid lobe failure. Diesel oil still has high zinc content but it too is being phased out.

for breaking in an engine i's stick to regular dino oil for the first 1000-1200 miles before you switch to synthetic zddp plus is a great zinc and phosphurous additive bradpenn oil is a great synthetic blend that has more then enough zinc and phosurous to keep a flat tappet cam happy amsoil i think it the best strait up synthetic...the race brand(violator?) has the needed phosurous and zinc

I just got my engine rebuilt and the rebuilder put castrol conventional oil in it for break in. Ive got about 3000 miles on it now, and 3 oil changes, i'm about to switch to synthetic. Should i throw some break in oil in it now, then go to synthetic? or will it not even make a difference?
