when i was chatting with my mechanic today, he asked when i was putting in a big block. i responded with "I have no money, so a new freakin' motor isn't in the immediate plans." he suggested a chevy 350. what have others installed? i don't want to spend more than $2500. can i do it? how much of an effort is it for a self change? I guess there are a lot od odds and ends to add in.

well, I'm no expert but I'll try to get you started in the right direction. to answer your question "what have others installed" you could say "almost anything you can think of!" personally if I were going to swap my motor out for any other motor it would be a chevy 350. parts availability and price would be greatly in my favor, and its a reliable, powerful motor with a great aftermarket. but heres a little of what NWOR has to offer: www.northwestoffroad.com/parts/automaticadapters.htmlcan you do it for under $2500? YES! but its going to take a bit of research and time. "advance adaptors" is the most popular conversion kit site and they want almost $2k for theirs advanceadapters.com/product/4261/1984-1995-Toyota-Truck-V8-Conversion-package.htmlI'm sure you can find a better deal on on the kit but... its a start. and finding a chevy 350 for $500 isnt at all unheard of, but their prices vary too, depends on what you're looking for. to be truthful, I would probably start off with a stock 350, see how the truck likes it and see about getting more power later (if she even needs it) that being said: I would probably never change out my ol 4cyl. she has almost 300k miles on her right now and does just fine. she'll wheel with the best of them and I never worry about gas out on the trails. when I had my ol chevy pickup and was getting 8mpg it really was a chore to get out of town. (I had to plan in advance because I would spend so much on gas) hope this helps man! -hill

well, it's starting to make some unwanted sounds and i can't get over 80 km/hr as of this morning. guess my time is running out and my research has to go into overdrive. would it be worth looking into a 4x4 garage that may have done this before?

4.3 v6 Chevy is the better idea you will have plenty of power with it and it fits like it was built to be there and will bolt up to the Toyota trans

4.3 v6 Chevy is the better idea you will have plenty of power with it and it fits like it was built to be there and will bolt up to the Toyota trans The 4.3 is a better swap (I have the earlier 3.8 in one of mine), but you still need adapters from AA, etc to do it. Plus cooling/driveline/exhaust mods, it doesn't just drop in.
