I have a '94 pickup 22re, basically stock. For the past few months it's been acting weird. When driving, and I take my foot off the gas it sometimes makes a noise like something totally loose under the truck, like it's just flapping there, almost like a spring un-winding. The thing is it doesn't do it all the time, it's kinda sporadic. The first time I heard it I assumed something was just loose, and needed tightening. But after crawling under there, and finding everything tight, I have no idea. The sound comes from right under the drivers feet, sometimes you can feel the vibration....
Also my CV boot is shot (discovered that when I crawled under the vehicle) I don't know how long it's been like that, but my question is how do you tell if a CV is bad? And since I'm planning on doing a SAS sometime soon, do I really need to worry about replacing the CV if it is bad?
Thanks
Chad

Check the heat shield around the CATALYTIC CONVERTER -Possible source of the flapping noise. If the CV boot is shot chances are the CV JOINT is bad from being exposed to dirt and water. Just an opinion - I would replace the joint and the boot at the same time.

Well, I'm pretty sure that it's not that. It is definitely something in the drive train or suspension... thanks though.

Continue on your course of checking out the CV joint.

Yeah, I think that's my plan. But how do I know if it's bad? And what happens if I just leave it until I do a SAS?

Is there alot of slop on your outer cv where it goes into your hub? There is a bushing there that makes alot some strange sounds on my 4runner. It comes and goes on mine but ith is just the cv vibrating because there is alot of slop. Mine has been like that for 2 years i havn't fixed it because i am panning to do a sas.

Kinda sounds like a clutch throw out bearing going out or a pilot bearing.. your sporadic sound

So any verdict on this? CV joint?
The throwout bearing will normally make more of a low whine and will also go away when the clutch is engaged.
