Hello, I need some advice about my 2WD 1989 Toyota pickup.
It has a 22R 4 cylinder engine witha 5 speed transmission (not sure exact type, anyone know the most common ones? So I can narrow the search to identify it?) Anyhow my speedometer and odometer do not work.
This is what I know thus far.
1. The cable seems to be good, I have the gauges pulled out and when I spin the inner part of the cable near the tranny the inner part that plugs to the gauges also spins.
2. The speedo and odo. seem to work since if I put a drill in the speedo cable input hole and spin it they both begin to show a reasonable reading.
3. I have the small metal part that connects to the tail end of the tranny and the transmission speedometer gear attaches to removed. (Anyone know what this item is called? The metal piece that the tranny speedo gear connects to? The part that the speedo cable attaches to is banged up a bit and may be worth replaceing) Also the plastic gear is a bit chewed up, it still seems like the tranny should spin it since there is significant teeth left on the gear but I do not know how "meaty" the teeth should be.
Anyhow anyone know of some places I could get a replacement gear? The truck has larger sized tires 33"x12.5" so I cannot get away with a stock replacement if I want the speedo to give an accurate reading.
If it is not the tranny speedo gear anyone have any other ideas?
Sorry for the lengthy post and multiple questions I just need to fix it asap since the registration is expired and in order to register it, I need to get it smogged and for smog I need a working speedo!
Thanks! -Nick
****I just was out messing with it some more and it looks like the shaft within the tail end of the tranny has a ring gear around the shaft. This gear would be the mated to the speedometer gear. The problem (i think it is a problem) is that this ring gear on the shaft slides along the shaft. So I can attach it the the speedo gear and they all spin until the ring gear just spins off the speedo gear. So what I am asking is whether or not that ring gear should slide along the shaft or if it should be stationary. Seems like it should not be sliding and then my problem would be solved? How should it be secured if it shouldn't be moving? Hope this makes sense!
Here are some pictures to show what I am talking about!
Just a view of the location where I am working (the speedo gear assembly is pulled out)

The inner shaft and ring gear (this ring gear should mate with the speedo gear) however the ring gear is sliding on teh shaft and leaves contact with plastic speedo gear!
