I have an 1981 truck, 22R. When I start it, it wants to cut out. It runs perfect once it warms up. It is running rich because there is soot building up in the air cleaner and plugs where black during recent change. I have had the choke checked out, it seems fine but there is something preventing air into the system when it's cold, if I rev it for 10-15 min at 2000 -2500 rpm it will warm up and then drive fine...?? It won't stay running on it's own if it's not warmed up. It coughs and sputters then dies.

The are a number of circuits that affect the carb on warm-up in addition to the choke. If you search the net you can find a 1985 Truck & 4runner Factory Service Manual that will cover the carb and emissions stuff.

Soot buildup in the aircleaner? Doesn't sound good to me try cleaning it out and changing your airfilter might run a little smoother.
