I have a 98 Taco. When I put it in 4 wheel drive and move left, right, or forward it will make a loud popping sound while in 4 wheel drive. It has manual hubs. I replaced the driver side axle thinking that it was that. If I unlock the hubs and pull it into 4 wheel drive no noise. Same if I leave the hubs locked in no noise. I was told that it was the hubs by some and the gears in the inner housing by others. HELP HELP SOS SOS

When I engage the transfer case. If I run it with the hubs locked in but don't engage the transfer case it won't make the noise. If I unlock the hubs and engage the transfer case it won't make the noise. Only when I am completley in 4 wheel drive does it make the noise. I was told I had a hub that wouldn't lock in fully. Any ideas? What year and model hubs will work on that axle. I think it is a 26 spline?

96 and up truck or 4Runner should work. Have you tried pulling them of for a clean and lube?

Ok so I guess like all good hounds I think I was barking up the wrong tree. I had a buddy of mine pull the truck back and forth and was finally able to locate the pop sound as being in the area of the bottom of transfer case to U-joint area. I unhooked the drive shaft the u-joint felt tight, however I was able to move the piece that comes out of the transfer case up and down by like an 1.5 inches. The seal started to leak. I guess I am in the market for a new transfer case then. If anybody out there has any good suggestions at all I would appreciate it.

I'd say your bearing is toast. I'd tear it down to check the damage and go from there. If it's just the bearing you could replace it. If the shaft is damaged then I'd check the bone yards or post up a want add for a t-case on the board. Could replace the shaft also, but it would be cheaper to get a used t-case. You could even sell your case for cheap for someone that wants to rebuild it or use the front half for a dual case set up.

ok now how hard is it to just replace those bearings and seals, if it is just the bearings could that be all the reason for the popping noise? What years will fit my truck it has the 4 cyl. What is the difference between the 4 cyl and 6 cyl. that they won't interchange. Would they possably make an adapter kit?
