i got an late 84 runner when i bought it it had an eltrice fuel pump outside tank i unhooked it to see if the one in tank was bad, it dont work. i bought a new eletric fuel pump becuase the old one was leaking i just wanna know would i be better off getting a new in tank one or just leave as is by the way i got a 22re

As long as the new fuel pump has the right pressure you could stay with it. I'd probably would go with the in tank. IMHO they seem to last longer and work better unless you go out and buy one of the high $$$ one.
If you replace the in tank one it will cost about $150 for one plus you'll want to replace the strainer too ($15-20). also while the tank is out it would be a good time to clean it out before replacing fuel pump.

yeah i got the high pressure pump for fuel injection 160 bucks my only thing is i'm getting a fuel smell inside the cab but i dont have any leaks i dont know i cant figure it out any suggestions been threw the whole fuel system no leaks i dont get it frustrating.

Check the injectors and fuel rail, o-rings go bad, etc. Sometimes the leaks are so small there's no real visible trace, so you might have to have it running.

done all that i think i found the problem last night the pressure release hose or whatever it called comeing out of the tank was cut in half so i mendid it for now it seems to be working drove all day with no smell so hopefully that fix it thanks for the addvice
