So my transmission just exploded... Sadly I wasn't driving it, so I don't now exactly how it happened. My buddy was using it to get his car unstuck, and it blew up on him. He said it just made a big "pop" So my question is what causes this to happen? What do I do to ensure that it doesn't happen again? Also, can I just replace the housing, instead of the whole transmission? Or am I pretty much guaranteed that the guts of if are shot? Any advice is greatly appreciated Chad The top of the Transmission, sheared in half! The bottom

The first thing to do is pull the trans and check out the damage fully. See if there's any hole or cracks in the front of the case within the clutch housing. If not then the internals maybe still good. Maybe even call around to a few local transmission shops and see if they can open the case and check the gears and everything for you just to be on the safe side. Some shops will do it for free or cheap as long as the trans is already pulled. You could open the case yourself if your mechanically inclined. They're not too hard to pull apart.
From the looks of it, it looks like your clutch may have blown up. If that's the case then you should be able to just change the clutch housing and the clutch.

Thanks Deadly. So I just want to clarify, the crack is in the Clutch Housing, not the transmission case? I wasn't sure of the terminology.
Thanks again

The bell housing (aka clutch housing) is removeable. Hopefully that's all you find damaged when you pull it out.

Well I got it pulled, and it looks like it will just be the clutch and bellhousing. But what causes a clutch to explode? Is it normal? And would it cause the housing to crack? Or do I still need to be looking for something else to be broken? you can see the bolt is worn to almost nothing from rubbing the housing, I'm assuming it happened after the clutch exploded. but not sure. It's not normal for the clutch to explode, but they can if they get too hot. Sometimes it could just be bad from the manufacture. Never seen one crack the case, but doesn't mean that it can't happen. Was there any noise coming from the trans or the engine before you lost the clutch. Also could just be a chance that there was a crack in the case already and from the torque of the engine it just slowly grew till it couldn't hold no more.
Can't tell from the pic if the clutch actually exploded or not. Were there any part in the housing when you pulled the trans? Have you pulled the clutch assembly apart yet?
It looks like you'll need a new fly wheel too. It seem to be missing a few teeth. Also might be a good idea to see about talking to a trans shop to see if they can check it out just to be sure nothing got damaged inside.
