My temp gauge seems to go from cold to normal and back to cold again. The heat coming out of the vents is always warm and never seems to get cold no matter where the gauge reads. Any idea's as to what or where to start my checks

Could be a faulty gauge, thermostat or radiator cap.

Ok, I understand the gauge could be faulty, and I don't mean to question your expertice, but if the thermostate or cap was bad wouldn't the truck be running hot? Like I said It starts fine, warms up idle drops gauge goes to where it should be then as I'm driving it will drop and then come back up to normal, sometimes it never moves from the normal range? How would I go about checking the gauge? Also like I said the heat coming through the vents never changes no matter where the gauge is? Oh and I live in Ontario Canada so as you know we can go from -10 to +10 in temp in a day.

If the cap seals well when cold and then looses the seal as it gets hot then it will release some of the heat, cooling it back down. Then if it cools down enough for it to reseal then it will start heating back up again. Eventually it could over heat if it last for a long period of time. Same goes with the thermostat (especially aftermarket) opening and closing. Aftermarket thermostats open quickly instead of slowly like a stock Toyota one.
One other thing it could be is the sending unit (sensor). I would lean more to the gauge or sending unit. Can't remember at the moment how to check them, but I know it's fairly simple and straight forward to do.
Also check to see if the cable is connected to the heater control valve under the hood near the firewall.

It's more likely the gauge or sender, what year truck?
W or w/o a tach in cluster?
