I just got my first toyota a few months ago. It is a 91 4x4 22RE and I know that they are good trucks. I know that the body and frame rusts easy and I was wondering what is the best way tom prvent that other than scraping the rust off, putting rust preventer and painting it? I was also wondering what are some typical things that are known to go wrong that i can keep up on so that it lasts me awhile

Welcome to the site. Other than head gasket issues and rust they are dependable. Previous and preventive maintenance and the age also have a lot to do with it. Something I always do when I purchase a used vehicle is change all the fluids this gives me a baseline or a starting place. ( note the color of the fluids) An example would be - silver color in the differential indicates excessive wear. Always use the correct fluids when you do this. I have seen a lot of transmissions with differential oil in them which ruins the brass synchronizers. The best way to make the frame last is to clean the inside of the frame rails by using compressed air or a garden hose. There are a lot of rust converter products on the market where you remove the large scale and apply the product over the rust and they use a sealer - primer and a top coat to prevent rust. There are also products that can be applied to the inside of the frame rails to help prevent rust. Check out this site - Eastwood . com. One nice feature I like about an older truck is that they go down the road and can make the same turns as a new vehicle for a fraction of the cost. Good luck on your resent purchase.
