we are changing the clutch in our 2001 Tacoma 4X4 with the 3.4L V6. everything is loose. all the bolts are clear. exhaust is out of the way; shafts and mounts are out. Yet the bell housing and block won't separate more than 3/4 of an inch.
we can wiggle it in every direction. and can see the spacer seal flop around. But the shaft will not clear or pull completely away. It is almost as if the input splines are fused into the clutch disk. because it is acting like we are pulling the springs back.
what are we doing wrong? did we miss something??

Is the shifter still in and getting caught? How about the transfer case shifter?

If you can get them 3/4" or so apart, I can't think of anything internal that would be causing the problem. Maybe something hanging up you don't see, or maybe just stuck.
You did pull the fork out, right?
