Hi, I own 2 1990 4 Runners with 3.0 liters. We are building a race 4 runner for class 7100 best in the desert and snore 7s.My original thought was to remove the transfer case and put a rear tailstock on the transmission and remove all 4 wd running gear. I am having a hard time finding this e lusive 2wd setup. Can anybody shed some light. Were all 2 wd 4 runners manual trans ?

Welcome to TOR !
I don't know if all 2wd 4runners were manual, but I doubt it. I'd think the people that didn't want 4wd would also be the type that didn't want to bother shifting either. But it really shouldn't be hard to find a 2wd auto to mate to the 3.0, they came in mini-trucks, 4runners and T100's from 88-95.

I keep going back and forth on whether or not to keep the 4wd. This vehicle will only be good for one thing and I'm trying to lighten it up. Lol . Good point about the manual shifting . I'll keep looking for that tail housing. Maybe I'll check with some big city salvage yards they might have more two wheel drive vehicles to pick from. Thanks for your input.

You should be able to stick with the Toyota rear axle and maybe up grade it with some chromoly axle shafts.

Actually I need to stay with the rear end that is in it. Rules state that I need to. Just wanting for traction with out the weight of 4 wheel drive.
