my 88 fuel injected engine (22re) is starting to make noises i'd rather not hear & i have an extra 87 carbed engine minus the manifolds. does anyone know if the externals will just bolt up? what kind of problems am i inviting? it's my understanding that the carb and fuel injection heads are different in some way.

The heads are different but, i think its only the mounting points for the intake that are different. Is it the timing chain thats making noise. Thats usually what happens.

The externals will bolt up fine, I did the reverse swap on my 87 22r - added the fuel injection. I hear the camshafts are a bit different but not enough for me to swap. Another possible and common noise is the valves needing adjustment. Can you give more info on the noise?

my current engine has piston slap that is gradually growing louder. it's got just over 200000 miles on it. i did a head gasket & timing chain about 16000 miles ago and adjusted the valves again about 8000 miles ago. it's had the slap for at least 25000 miles & recently the oil light flickers back on sometimes after a semi-warm start. just planning for the inevitable.
