I was thinking about axle options and also came across the thought of the Unimog 404 Portal Axles. How much stronger are these axles then the 60? Are they stronger? There prices arent cheap but if there are stronger than the 60 i think that they are worth it, dont u think. So yea which axle is stronger?

Portals, that's a whole new level of fabrication. You end up with quite a bit more lift on the same spring, not to mention interferance problems with the bottom of the motor. Then there is the steering to figure out as well. Sure the portals are likely stronger then a 60 with lower gears and can be often had with cable accuated locker from the factory. But the fact reamins a portal axle is yet to win any major rockcrawling competetion while 60's have won many. I just don't think the increased COG is worth the clearance you gain, given the the hassels of making these huge axles work under a toy. Most Toys I have seen with portals, are using the Volvo axles, which are smaller and cheaper but still plenty strong with massively low gearing As well don't forget that the difference between buying parts for domestic stuff like a 60, compared to buying Mercedes parts.

I hear what your saying. But Why would i have interferance with the motor if its gonna be well lifted. See if would run these axles it would be with 44s and 15" of lift. I dont plan on doin any flexing so i dont see how they would interfer. My purpose of thinking to install these kind of axles is not for better COG, just want to buy somethin that will last. I dont think ive heard of one breaking, and they have that would be under hardcore use, Which i dont plan to give it. And yea ur right, the parts are more expensive, but if they will last more than 60 part. i dunno i think its worth it. Another good feature that i like about having portal axles is that can get a rear axle with rear steering. I dont plan to rock crawl or need the this kind of option, but it would be badass to see the faces of people at beach or where ever. BTW have u heard anything about streetdriving? I know they have 7:56 gearing. What affects would i expect?
