Over this past summer I bought an '81 reg cab pick-up. It is a unfinished project that the previous owner had given up on. Most of the hard stuff has been done already. The frame has been repaired/replaced. From mid-cab back has been replaced and cab-forward has been boxed in. The cab has been repaired at the lower rear corners of the cab the rest of the cab is in very good condition. And is pretty much ready for paint. For the suspension I'm going with the 63" chevy's in the rear since I already have them and might go with the rears up front. I traded a set of toy axles for a doubler kit so I took some of the money that I had saved and bought the v-6 rear axle that I wanted. I did a side job and the guy paid me for the work I did on his Tacoma and then offered me some scrap steel. Since I like to mess around a lot I said I'd take it well it turned out that his scrap steel was a pair od 2x4 square tube sliders ;D Which works out great because they are a good platform to work the exo-cage off of. I'm going with propane on this build I already got the 4cyl mixer and two tank mounts I just have to get the rest of the parts for it. I'm going to run stock gears in the difs and I doubt that I'll run tires any larger than 35's probably 33's to start off with. I'll be welding the rear dif and run a Aussie locker in the front. And with having the dual t-cases It should be a lot of fun if not I'll add the 4.7 low range gears. I don't want to over build this rig otherwise it'll take the challenge out of wheeling it. I'll have some pics up as soon as I set up a new host for them.

well i care when in driving down the road and i pull out in front of somebody and cant get the hell out of the way! unless he plans on trailering this this around everywhere then that setup will get annoying. with the 33's yes, 35's no!

It will be a trailer queen that's for sure. Exo-cages are borderline illegal in the state of PA. And beadlocks are def illegal. I will most likely be running Pitbull rockers 35x14.5 on 15" beadlocks. And like rockcrawlintoy stated with dual cases I don't need dif gears. And if the duals can't handle it then I'll go with 4.7 gears in the rear case. It's a more cost effective plan. This is a budget build and I will not be dumping a lot of money into it. I did that with my Tacoma which is my excursion rig. I need something to just flat out thrash on the rocks. The reason for running 33"s is because I already have a set that aren't worth the effort to sell but are def good enough to run trails for awhile.

I didn't get much done this weekend. One of the off-road clubs had a slot in one of the bigger parades in the area. So a few of us got to drive our junk piles in the parade ;D It was great there were thousands of people, for a small little farm town they sure do love this parade. I even got to tow a heep through the last half of the parade. ;D But on Sun I did get the rear axle back under it and I started to set up the dual cases. I hope to have this ready for a test run during our Frosty Balls run in Feb.

I scored some parts for this project. I came across the mixer and a pair of tank mounts for the propane set-up for $140 ;D
I got the reduction box off of the other t-case all went well except for the snap ring located on the gear shaft that was a PITA to remove even when I got a hold of a good pair of snap ring pliers. So I should have the doublers finished by the end of the weekend.

Doublers are done. I just have to get the x-member from BudBuilt and that'll be good to go. This weekend I'm going to try and get the sliders moched up. I have to work this Sat but we'll see what happens.

Hey Hoodlum, Don't know how I missed this tread, but I did. I know we've PMed each other a few times a while back about this rig, but never noticed you started a tread on it.
So how is it going? Gonna have it ready for Frosty Balls run next month?
New pics man, where are they?

LOL I've been slacking....a lot ;D nah I had to replace the head on my Tacoma again. The head I bought last year turned out to be defective from the door. And they wouldn't stand behind they're product(Alabama Cylinder head) I got one from Clearwater CH this time and they gave me a 2 year no BS warranty on a new head opposed to a re-manned one. So that ate up my extra funds. I'm also buying a '86 runner 4cyl garage kept and serviced by one of our top techs who passed away recently. This runner belonged to his sister who just traded it in and bought a FJ Cruiser. This thing is mint ;D I did get the doublers done and need a couple of weeks to get the x-member. I'm moching the sliders this weekend and I hope to be ordering the cab mount bushings and removing the 3" BL I still have to make a decision on where and how for the temporary fuel cell until I get the rest of the parts needed to hook up the propane.(I have to be able to move it around the lot as needed) I do need to take some pics I tried last week but didn't realize I was out of batteries for the camera We've put off the exo-cage until later in the spring because we have to do at least 2 rigs if not 3 so we figure we'll spend a long weekend in the shop and do them at the same time since a lot of the designs are so close to being the same. It should be easier to duplicate the bends instead of doing one truck then remember everything we did when we start the second one. Not all that far(to me anyway). Why? It takes me 5 to 6 hrs to get to Bristol VA/TN 3 hrs give or take to Roanoke I bellieve Manassas is south of Roanoke. So say like 4hrs.(if my bearings are correct)

I just got a set of bucket seats from a Honda courtesy of one of our Honda tech's here at work and free of charge. ;D It turns out that Jeff had sold off a project car that he replaced the factory seats for some racing one's.

Well my good friend nathanpatacoma was feeling generous this weekend and gave me the 1.5" wheel spacers that he won at last years EC4RJ So now the front should be a little wider than the rear.Who knows I may get something accomplished this weekend but I'll probably end up working on cc89irocs D-60's So that we can get his rig rolling around again. Thanks Nate!

Hopefully in the next two months i will be breakin out the fly rods and doing a bit of fly fishin before turkey season opens.
Do you know Jason, "beater" he lives 10 min down the road from me as well.

I was trailing with Beater aka one of the Jasons when we made Off-Road magazine. I suck at fly fishing in fact I suck at trout fishing all together.lol I do very well with many other species but there's just something about trout fishing I just don't seem to grasp.
